When the Surgical Tower is complete in the summer of 2022, it will be the largest building on the UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill campus.

QC Commercial, LLC, an industrial and commercial painting contractor based in Raleigh, NC, is coming off back-to-back record years in revenue and earnings, and the future continues to look bright for the company. QC just signed a contract with Skanska USA Building Inc. for the UNC Surgical Towers Project located at 101 Manning Drive in Chapel Hill, NC.

The contract is upwards of $2 million and will keep QC crews on-site for two years. The scope of work includes the painting of two new concrete and steel pedestrian bridges which will be used by visitors and staff to access the hospital from the Dogwood and Cardinal parking decks. Bridge A is part of Phase I and is already under construction with plans to paint in February 2020. The construction of the surgical tower is also underway but will not require painters until later in 2020.

When the Surgical Tower is complete in the summer of 2022, it will be the largest building on the UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill campus at more than 330,000 square feet. The new seven-story building will have 24 new operating rooms, 56 pre/postoperative care areas, and 56 intensive care unit beds. The total cost is projected to be $350 million.

QC’s scope will include the application of 9,500 gallons of paint—a combination of conventional and high-performance coatings. There will be over 500,000 square feet of drywall and more than 650 metal doors and frames. The project also involves exterior painting including the two new pedestrian bridges mentioned previously (pictured below). All-in-all it should be a great project for QC as the company continues to grow and expand its customer base.

In addition to the Surgical Tower project for Skanska, QC has been awarded another project by UNC Hospitals, this one as a subcontractor for DPR Construction. This will be the second UNC Hospital project working with DPR. QC teamed up with DPR in 2018 to complete the construction of the new CTICU renovation located on the fourth floor of the UNC Women’s Hospital.

This new project, the Emergency Department Transition Unit (EDTU), has already begun and is scheduled to be completed in June of 2020. This interior retrofit is located inside the main UNC Neurosciences Hospital also located at 101 Manning Drive in Chapel Hill.

Raleigh is part of NC’s Research Triangle, one of the country’s largest and most successful research parks, and a major center in the United States for high-tech and biotech research.

College and Professional Sports

The Carolina Hurricanes, based in Raleigh, NC, and part of the National Hockey League, won the Stanley Cup Final in 2006 and reached the playoffs in the most recent season. Raleigh residents are also known to frequent Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets games in nearby Charlotte, NC.
